This print was commissioned by The Times Square Alliance, to celebrate their 25th anniversary.
Earlier that year, my work had been included in their Midnight Moment program, and I co-led a "Jane's Walk" of Times Square with Tim Tompkins, the president of the Alliance.
I grew up on 43rd Street and 10th Avenue, only a few blocks from Times Square, so these artistic engagements with this space meant a lot to me.
The perspective depicted in this print is based on the view out the window of The Times Square Alliance's new offices. Because images of Times Square are so familiar, I wanted to choose a point-of-view not generally accessible to the public. The high angle also works nicely conceptually with the celebration of the Alliance, which takes care of this space.
I was also interested in the LED technology that powers the billboards - in part because my opera A Marvelous Order uses that same tech.
