I participated in a study about forecasting future news events and I did so well they called me one of the "Superforecasters" and wrote about me in a book and it was awesome. It was a New York Times bestseller and was named one of the best books of the year by The Economist. You can buy it here.

Mural in Wassaic

Meredith and Mitch's Marlette
2016
Wassaic, NY

Eve and I designed this crawfish mural for our friends' trailer in Wassaic, NY. There are crawfish in the creek right behind the trailer, and sometimes on hot summer days we jump in there with them.

India Street in context

India Street Rocket
2009
Brooklyn, NY
25' x 21'

Eve and I designed this mural, located on India Street between West Street and the East River. The India Street Rocket offers a metaphor for celebration in uncertain times.

The mural is part of the India Street Mural Project and was commissioned by The North Brooklyn Public Art Coalition and coordinated with assistance from Groundswell. The short documentary was created by Vanara Taing in 2009.

The photo below was taken in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy when, for some reason, smoke was rising up from the sewer grates below the rocket.

Real Good
2009
Queens, NY
131' x 12'

Eve and I designed this mural, located where the LIRR passes over 63rd Drive in Rego Park, Queens.

Rego Park derives its name from the Real Good Construction Company which began operating in the neighborhood in the 1920's.

The mural was commissioned by The Rego Park Green Alliance and NYCares.

Muralmorphosis
2010
Philadelphia
2' 42"

An animated mural handed back and forth amongst several artists, in the style of Exquisite Corpse.

The artists were on the wall for a total of two weeks, making a painting, taking a photo, changing the painting, taking a photo, etc. Eve and I averaged about 15 minutes a frame, including moving the scaffolding in and out of frame.

We created the UFO, the cubes, the fish and the arrows.
I edited the film.

Artists: Eve Biddle/Joshua Frankel, Rodney Camarce,
Bonnie Brenda Scott, Seth Turner, Mauro Zamora.
Curated by Sean Stoops.

Commissioned by The Philadelphia Mural Arts Program. The painting of the wall was a two week performance included in the Philadelphia Fringe Festival in 2009. The film showed in several festivals, including the Animation Block Party, and was broadcast on the Sundance Channel's website.

KA-BAR
"Wild Boar"
2011
30 seconds

I directed three spots for KA-BAR, the first commercials ever for a 100+ year-old brand. This one is voiced by artist Paul Outlaw. Check out the other two spots and behind-the-scenes footage here.

Like a Diamond

Like a Diamond
Silkscreen Print
Edition: 50
16"x20"
2017

This print was commissioned by The Times Square Alliance, to celebrate their 25th anniversary.

Earlier that year, my work had been included in their Midnight Moment program, and I co-led a "Jane's Walk" of Times Square with Tim Tompkins, the president of the Alliance.

I grew up on 43rd Street and 10th Avenue, only a few blocks from Times Square, so these artistic engagements with this space meant a lot to me.

The perspective depicted in this print is based on the view out the window of The Times Square Alliance's new offices. Because images of Times Square are so familiar, I wanted to choose a point-of-view not generally accessible to the public. The high angle also works nicely conceptually with the celebration of the Alliance, which takes care of this space.

I was also interested in the LEDs that illuminate the billboards — in part because my opera A Marvelous Order uses the same technology.

The films in this program explore the concept of collage in motion-pictures through juxtapositions, both stark and subtle, of media, aesthetic and authorship. The media incorporated into the films in the program include handmade marks, handmade objects, found objects, photographs, stylized computer generated imagery and live action footage. The act of collage reminds the viewer that a motion-picture is an object crafted by an artist or team of artists. These films feature the fingerprints of their creators prominently. They are also a lot of fun.

This program screened at the Wassaic Project in 2011.

Mosheh
Composed by Yoav Gal
2006

Projection Designer

I collaborated with my friend Caitlin Berrigan to create Drops, a short film that became part of Mosheh - an opera by composer Yoav Gal that premiered at the Merkin Concert Hall in New York City in 2006. The opera tells the story of Moses, focusing particularly on his relationships with the different women in his life. Drops accompanied a piece of music representing Moses’ circumcision and, by extension, the ten plagues.

Happiness
Directed by Susan Stroman
Lincoln Center Theater
2009

Projection Designer

I designed a series of projections for Happiness, an original musical that ran at Lincoln Center in the Mitzi Newhouse Theater.

This is one of my favorites - a representation of the lights that streak passed the windows of a subway in motion. It was projected onto and behind a moving subway car on stage.

Young Frankenstein
Music and Lyrics by Mel Brooks
Broadway
2007

Animation Designer

I created a series of animated projections for this show, working directly with Mel Brooks and director Susan Stroman. Here's one of the numbers I worked on, performed on Letterman. I made the spooky projected forest.
